"Where does it come from and what does it actually mean?" Where Common Phrases Come From and What They Actually Mean

Sentences are like similes: sometimes you use them while riding a Ferris wheel, and sometimes they don't make sense. There are some sentences that have recurred in the English language over the years, but did you ever wonder what some of them mean? Word scientists have studied some of these well-known phrases for years without a clue to what they mean - until now! "There are plenty of fish in the sea." People will often use this one right after a breakup. But what do aquatic animals have to do with lost love? Nothing, actually! This phrase was originally used by members of the Illuminati as a sort of "signal" to potential members, and what better time to join the Illuminati than after a break up with a significant other? The phrase became widely used in the late 18th Century as the secretive organization was beginning its recruitment, and it is still used to this day. If you're approached by someone who mutters this phrase to you - be it in your car...

Surviving Winter: A Survival Guide

Winter, along with centipedes and Kevin Spacey, is one of the scariest seasons of the year. Snow, ice, and cold temperatures can literally send a shiver down your spine. But you don't have to hide inside expensive titanium hibernation tubes like some people do in order to make it to spring. In fact, some people have gotten completely gotten rid of their  families' extended sleep chambers by following these tips. 1. Scrape the snow off your car by altering your body through the splicing of your genes with various animals.  Scraping ice off your car in the morning before you go to work can really be a pain. It can be incredibly inconvenient for a human being born without a proper fur covering or talon-like appendages. I mean, if you have gloves on its not so bad, that's kind of like fur, and ice scrapers do a pretty good job I guess, but sometimes you forget those things. You wouldn't forget a giant tusk if it was surgically implanted to your face, though, or a t...

New Years Resolutions - Tips

Webster's dictionary defines New Years as "a year that is new." With newness comes change, and with change comes rejuvenation, and with rejuvenation comes resolutions, and with resolutions comes change, and with change comes confusion. "What should my New Years resolution be?" you may have asked yourself in a Taco Bell parking lot at 2am. Well here are some ideas that may help the upcoming New Year be one of the best years of 2015. Put down your quilting and look at the world around you! Kids these days seem to have one thing on their minds: quilting. Everywhere you look you see something about quilts: quilting magazines, quilting "selfies," and even quilting reality shows. I, for one, am sick of it! Society has replaced "hanging out" and "friendship" with "patches" and "needles," and the mother of our nation Betsy Ross would be doing backflips in her grave if she could see us now. While teens, tweens, an...

Painful Pain

With my eyes I cry, the tears tear tears In my skin, like shards of glass. And I bleed emotion. Emotion that cuts at my heart, like another shard of glass, And breaks it, like a rock through a pane of glass. A pane that is painful whenever it is touched and falls apart like a shattering of glass. A shattering that scatters my smattered pain. Painful pain, full of glass and empty burrito wrappers

Emotion, Inc.

Mel hung up the phone and stared straight ahead, replaying the conversation in his head. He knew he had to tell his boss what had happened, but how? There was a knock on his door and a tan face with a grin of shiny white teeth stepped into his office. “Ready for the meeting, Choly?” He laughed at an untold joke. “Yup,” said Mel, taking a deep breath. “I’m excited, we’ll get to hear how well we worked! And if not, boss always gives the best advice.” As Mel walked past him he gave him a forceful pat on the back. Mel just ignored him. “What’s wrong, friend?” “It’s nothing, Smiley.” The two walked down the hallway and towards the conference room. “Well whatever it is, I’m sure this meeting will cheer you up!” Mel suspected the exact opposite would happen, but he simply sighed. The two stepped into a room where a man and a woman sat at a long table. He and Smiley took seats next to each other, and as they sat dow...

The Customer is Not Always Right

Though he was only the smallest pizza delivery boy - not that being a pizza delivery boy made him any less important than, say, a doctor, or a police officer, because even doctors and police officers need to eat pizza so they can save lives – in the smallest pizzeria in the smallest town in the smallest county in the state, Randy could not help but feel that it was his job and his job alone to act in the best interest of him and all those that came after him, a conclusion he came upon during these several strange encounters he had with the less than ordinary customer between seven forty-five and eight-thirty that evening: first, the phone call when the customer ordered a human spinal fluid and cerebellum pizza (without cheese!) that clued him into the fact that this customer did not have a very healthy diet; second, the strange series of beeps and boops he received when he asked for the customer’s name that were followed by the customer...
